Ogham ('oh-am') represents the earliest form of writing in Ireland. Made up of a series of lines or "strokes" creating an alphabet, they can be found on ancient wood and primitive written texts. Most famously however, Ogham can be found throughout Ireland carved into monolithic stones. These stones, often standing sentry in commemoration of a loved one or as a territorial marker, are a fascinating piece of ancient history. Many like to believe that Ogham is connected to Druidic practice, and that it is a "language of the trees" or perhaps even part of runic divination. While there is little proof that Ogham is connected to these mystic arts, it can be difficult to argue that these stones have a certain magic about them.
The fragrance of our Ogham Stone collection is meant to evoke the aura of wet stone and earth on the rainy countryside. While familiar, this is a mysterious scent that also seeks to find the magic of Ogham that we want to believe.

Ogham stone is my favorite scent of all of the shaving soaps I’ve tried. I enjoy it so much I bought the bundle! Top of the line shave, always feels fresh afterwards!
I have tried several brands of artisan soaps. The newer Aon base is hands down my favorite base. It takes a little more water than the old softer formula, but it leaves your face feeling great. There is no grease or oil left behind. It is just a smooth, and ultra close, shave that leaves your skin feeling soft and fresh. The scent of the puck initially reminded me of incense and flowers. They scent evolves as you lather and becomes a spicy floral that works down to a warm earthy scent. After a couple of days in the apothecary cup things change and the wet stone scent comes together.
I was actually looking for shaving brush cleaner and ended-up at the Murphy & McNeil site. I've been wet shaving for quite a while but don't keep-up with new products that well, and never heard of Murphy & McNeil. I found some good reviews and decided to try the Gael Luc and Ogham Stone soaps, along with the Zingari Man brush cleaner I ordered. The soaps have different scents but performed about the same, so I'm using the same review for both. For comparison, I've used several different commonly known shave soaps and creams through the years. I don't think I've ever used an "artisan soap". The scents of both Gael Luc and Ogham Stone were pleasant and not overwhelming, which is the way I prefer it. I use a mug and both soaps were easy to lather which was dense and creamy. Using a small amount, I could make enough later for my usual 3 passes with no problem. I really liked the lubrication that this soap provided. It's the best I've ever used. Although I use a Thayers witch hazel for aftershave, it doesn't really seem that necessary to use an aftershave with these soaps. I'm very pleased with these shaving soaps.
Aon base is incredible in every way. Easy to lather, slick, and the post shave feel is REALLY REALLY good. Silky and smooth and healthy feeling. Now the scent of this is equally legit. Earthy and manly and very very nice. Wearable everyday
In more than 20 years of "traditional" shaving, I have tried well over over one hundred shaving soaps, and these past few years have been most exciting, given the creative juices flowing from artisan shaving soapmakers. After reading about Murphy & McNeil in a Sharpologist mention, I was intrigued and ordered several shaving soaps and balms. These are absolutely superb products, certainly in my top three. They are elegant in every way: slick and soothing lather and great after shave feel, wonderfully subtle and complex scents, and priced fairly. Bravo for these wonderful creations!
